Paragraph 4.26 of the National Education Policy 2020 states: 'Every student will take a fun course, during Grades 6-8, that gives a survey and hands-on experience of a sampling of important vocational crafts, such as carpentry, electric work, metal work, gardening, pottery making, etc., as decided by States and local communities and as mapped by local skilling needs.' The same paragraph adds that 'All students will participate in a 10-day bagless period sometime during Grades 6-8 where they intern with local vocational experts such as carpenters, gardeners, potters, artists', that NCERT will design a practice-based curriculum for Grades 6-8, and that similar internship opportunities may be extended throughout Grades 6-12. Grade 6 is therefore where compulsory vocational exposure begins, and everything above it is continuation rather than commencement. Chapter 16, 'Reimagining Vocational Education', says the same thing in policy language: paragraph 16.4 commits to 'integration of vocational education programmes into mainstream education in all education institutions in a phased manner', 'beginning with vocational exposure at early ages in middle and secondary school', and undertakes that 'every child learns at least one vocation and is exposed to several more'.
