Let the one-way distance be d km, walking speed w km/h and cycling speed c km/h. Given d/w + d/c = 5.75 h and 2d/c = 3.75 h (because cycling both ways saves 2 h), we get d/c = 1.875 h. Substituting, d/w = 5.75 – 1.875 = 3.875 h, so walking both ways takes 2 × 3.875 = 7.75 h = 7 h 45 min, i.e. option (b).
