UPSC 2006: There are 8 equidistant points A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H in the clockwise direction on the periphery of a circle. In a time-interval t, a person reaches from A to C with uniform motion while another person reaches the point E from the point B during the same time-interval with uniform motion. Both the persons move in the same direction along the circumference of the circle and start at the same instant. How much time after the start will the two persons meet each other?

Person 1 covers arc A→C (90°) in time t, so speed = 90°/t. Person 2 covers B→E (135°) in the same time, so speed = 135°/t. Setting their angular positions equal modulo 360°: (90 τ⁄t) − (135 τ⁄t) ≡ 45° ⇒ (−45 τ⁄t) ≡ 45° (mod 360°) ⇒ 45 τ⁄t ≡ 315° ⇒ τ⁄t = 7 (smallest positive). Thus they first meet after 7t.
