After suppressing the Santhal Uprising, the British passed the Sonthal Parganas Act (22 Dec 1855) creating a separate ‘Santhal Parganas’ district, and later enacted the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act 1876 that barred transfer of Santhal land to non-Santhals.
