In the Southern Hemisphere the westerlies blow largely over uninterrupted ocean, so surface friction is low and the winds remain strong and persistent, making statement 1 correct. The Coriolis parameter depends on latitude (f = 2ω sin φ) and is the same magnitude at a given latitude in both hemispheres (sign differs only in direction), so statement 2 is incorrect.
