Portuguese merchants were the first Europeans to establish a trading centre at Pondicherry in 1521. After them the Dutch (not the French) captured the town in 1693, and the British occupied it several times (1761, 1793, 1803, 1804) before restoring it to France; hence statements 2 and 3 are wrong, leaving only statement 1 correct.
