Mid-latitude deciduous forest, also called temperate broadleaf deciduous forest, grows where winters are cold enough to freeze the soil but summers are warm and rain falls through the year. Its trees are broadleaved and shed their entire canopy in autumn — beech, oak, maple, hickory, walnut, chestnut, birch and elm. It occupies three separate blocks in the northern hemisphere: eastern North America, western and central Europe, and eastern Asia. Leaf litter is thick and decays into a rich brown forest soil, which is one reason these were the first great forests cleared for farming.
The trap in statement 1 is real rather than careless. There is a deciduous forest whose trees drop their leaves in the hot part of the year — the tropical deciduous or monsoon forest, where teak, sal and mahua shed in the dry season before the monsoon, and where the shortage that forces the shedding is water rather than warmth.
