Case Study – I A sugar mill unit was established close to a city. Local people objected to it but their opposition was brushed aside. When the unit started its full-swing cane-crushing, there was a lot of pollution caused by industrial effluents. Burning of bagasse in boilers produced nitrogen, carbon and sulphur which affected the health status of the people. However, it led to a series of agitations by local people demanding immediate closure of the plant. Agitations created law-and-order problems, so stern police action was taken.
